Located on the same site as Northern Cemetery, Chanterlands Crematorium and the gardens are a respectful and attractive place to say goodbye to, commemorate and remember your loved one.
Chanterlands Crematorium contains a dedicated baby and child area and is Infant and Baby Cremation accredited by the Institute of Cemetery and Crematory Management (ICCM). Our staff are fully trained and competent in cremation process and good practice.
Both the large and small chapel have a portico that offers shelter during bad weather for those waiting outside and there is an indoor waiting area too. Each are accessed separately with ample space for funeral cars right outside the entrance and exit. Our on-site team are happy to show you round both chapels so that you can select the one you prefer.
Each chapel slot is 1 hour. Please note that this time also should include the time for people to enter and exit the chapel and for the cleaning and preparation of the chapel for the following service. If you think that a service might take longer, we offer the facility to book two consecutive slots.
Large Chapel
Adorned by deep purple curtains the large chapel has seating for 220 people including on a first floor mezzanine. There are two screens for photo display.
Small Chapel
With seating for 46 people the small chapel has a warm and cozy feel. There is one screen for photo display.
Sunken Garden Pond
Designed to be a beautiful and meaningful area, the mature sunken garden has been shaped over the years by the families who have chosen to commemorate their loved ones here. The large pond adds a glistening water feature and is a lovely tranquil place to sit by.
Book of Remembrance
A set of large books where inscriptions can be made on the date that a loved one died. The books are displayed in their own room within the crematorium building and the pages are turned each morning.

Site History
Integrating seamlessly with Northern Cemetery, Chanterlands Crematorium opened in 1961 to replace the original at Hedon Road Cemetery. With four Cremators instead of one, it improved waiting times significantly.
The Forget Me Not Garden was added in 2025 to commemorate and bury the ashes of the victims of Legacy Funeral Directors.
