Site History

Northern Cemetery Opened in 1915. The imposing but rather beautiful Columbarium was added in 1936 following the closure of the original Columbarium at Hedon Road Cemetery.

Still standing tall is the disused red brick chapel building which was Grade II listed by Historic
England in January 1994.

The cemetery contains Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) graves. There are 423 casualties from World War 1 and World War 2 buried here. There is a dedicated area that contains service personal graves and inscribed walls.

There is also a mass grave where at least 327 men, women and children civilian casualties from World War 2 Air Raids are buried. A memorial pays tribute along with storyboards, seating and rows of peace roses. A yearly memorial service takes place here in May at 2pm to remember those lost. This is open to the public, and you can find details of the next one on our events page.

Another notable grave here is that of Amy Johnson's parents, John William Johnson and Amy Hodge. There ashes are inferred within the Columbarium.
