The Woodland Walk is an inspiring and interactive path that leads around Priory Woods Cemetery. The trail provides a short walk of around 10 minutes at a gentle pace (without stopping) and is open for everyone to enjoy.

Helping Children Through Bereavement

The area was designed with children in mind, especially those who have or are about to experience a death in the family. This beautiful and light-hearted walk incorporates the Woodland Friends Trail and is a pleasant place to speak to a child about bereavement.

The natural and calming atmosphere can help them to understand that the cemetery is not a frightening place, and to talk about their present or future feelings of loss.

There are lots of interactive parts to explore -

Race the Train

If you are lucky enough to arrive at our railway platform at a time when a train is passing on the track next door, you should get ready to race!

Memory Garden

Memory Garden

The Woodland Walk ends at the Memory Garden, where further activities are in place for children to enjoy. The garden also houses an area containing the Letters to Heaven post box.

Processing Grief and the National Curriculum

From September 2026, all schools will need to include grief and bereavement topics as part of RSHE lessons. In order to prepare for and acknowledge the emotional experience this has on children and young people. Children are naturally curious and open to learning about life challenges such as death, and questions should be encouraged.

The Woodland Walk was designed with this in mind and invites communities and schools to use the space as a setting for these discussions. It is hoped that it will aid these conversations by providing a bright, open space and demonstrating that cemeteries are not frightening places, but somewhere we reflect and remember loved ones.
